Design & Chassis

Dell XPS 15 design
The design is industrial with silver aluminum lid and the soft-touch interior black is highlighted by round corners. At the center of the lid and bottom bezel is a glossy Dell logo which looks nice. Speaking of the bezels, they are InfinityEdge which has made possible to encase a 15.6 inches display in a 14.1 inches size. Certainly, it is astonishing and most of the users will love it. The interior is covered by black-carbon-fiber which is as exceptional as the exterior. In addition, the top right corner of the deck contains a power button which also functions as a fingerprint reader.

The laptop measures 14.1 x 9.9 x 0.7 inches making it one of the slimmer notebook compared to the competitors. Plus, it weighs only 4.2 ponds, so you don’t have to bear extra weight on your shoulder while carrying it around. Although Huawei MateBook X Pro is the smallest measuring 12 x 8.5 x 0.6 inches and weighs only 2.9 pounds, but it sports a smaller screen of 14 inches, hence XPS 15 is the winner again.

Performance

Although XPS 15 is very slim, yet it packs very powerful specs. It comes with 4.1GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti graphics card and 512GB PCIe SSD. Even if you open 20 Google Chrome tabs while watching a movie or doing other intensive tasks, it won’t slow down. More, the CPU is very faster compared to the 1.8GHz Intel Core i7 of Huawei MateBook X and 3.1GHz Intel Core i7 of HP Spectre x360. In addition, the SSD is not just huge but faster as well which can copy 4.97GB of data in 23 seconds having a transfer rate of 221 megabytes per second.

Below the silver skin of the premium mainstream notebook breath a gaming laptop. Equipped with GTX 1050Ti with 4GB of VRAM, it will give you a very smooth gameplay. While playing Dirt 3 it measures frame rate of 189 fps that is more than the Spectre x360 182 fps and MateBook X 117 fps. What if you are not playing game? Well, it will automatically switch to the integrated Intel UHD 630 graphics through Nvidia’s Optimus technology.

Display & Speakers

XPS 15 features 15.6 inches 4K (3840 x 2160) display which delivers next level images. Also, the screen is touch sensitive, so if you are into drawing or photo editing it will serve you in the best possible way. More, the screen is anti reflective and 371 nits of brightness let you do your work or enjoy entertainment in the open. In addition the panel is IPS type so viewing angle is very wide and picture quality won’t disturb even if you are watching from perspective or share the screen with someone else. On top of that, it produces 160 percent of sRGB color gamut, hence you can capture every inch of details without needing to zoom in.

Similarly, the bottom-mounted speakers generate loud and clear sound which is enough to fill a large conference room. The melodies are excellent and free of distortion, so during a break listening to your favorite track will certainly amuse you. However, you will notice a significant distortion when the singer goes for high note. Happily, the pre-installed Waves Audio Software make up for that.

Ports

As we have mentioned earlier that XPS 15 is very slim, yet the ports are more than enough for a solid work and gaming enthusiast. So, on the right side you will find a USB 3.1 Type-A port, a five lights battery status indicator, a noble lock slot and an SD card reader. The lock slot will protect your data and no one can log in your laptop in your absence. Simultaneously, the left side features another USB Type-A port, a Thunderbolt 3 port, an audio jack and an HDMI 2.0 port. HDMI 2.0 is admirable because it has a much faster loading time than HDMI 1.4.

Keyboard & Touchpad

Dell XPS 15 keyboard
The two important things that you should look in a keyboard for comfortable typing experience are key travel and actuation force. The recommended key travel and actuation force are 1.5mm and 60 grams respectively. Typically, if a keyboard has such shallow buttons like XPS 15 which travel only 0.7mm, you will notice much bottoming out. However, the island-style keys and 70 grams of actuation force prevent bottoming out. Plus, your wrist will rest very conveniently on the soft deck. Thus, if you have to type for longer session you will love XPS 15’s keyboard.

The touchpad is spacious measuring 4 x 3.1 inches providing sufficient space for navigation. Along with this, it is precise, accurate and quick to response. In addition, it accepts various operating system gestures like pinch to zoom and three-finger tap to invoke Cortana.

Battery

Dell XPS 15 9570 sports very powerful specs like Core i7 processor and 4K display, so most of the laptop with such a powerful configuration do not last longer. Fortunately, it can last up to 8 hours which is well above Spectre x360 over 5 hours battery backup but slightly below over 9 hours of MateBook X. Though, you should know that none of them come with such powerful configuration like XPS 15. Hence, up to 8 hours battery juice is admirable and more than enough to get you through a long working day.

Camera

Everything comes with a price, although you will love the InfinityEdge bezels but due to this the webcam is placed at the bottom bezel just above the hinge. It is very awkward position and upon turning on the camera it will capture your nose and chest. So, by adjusting a proper angle it will take quite a bit, anyway once you get used to it, it won’t be an issue any further. On the bright side, the webcam manages to superbly capture color and gives you sharp and detailed images. Even it can express coating and stripes on your dress.

Heat

Inspite of metallic lid and frame the system stays pretty cool. Also, the machine is very powerful yet maintaining the acceptable temperature is praiseworthy. 95 degrees Fahrenheit is the comfort threshold for a laptop, so after 15 minutes of playing the bottom measured 92 degrees, the touchpad 90 degrees and the keyboard 83 degrees. Each measurement is below 95 degrees, hence you should not panic about it.

Bottom Line

Powerful performance, long battery life and gorgeous 4k display in a very slim chassis are the things that most users are wishing for. Well, Dell XPS 15 9570 is here to fulfill all your wishes if the price tag is not a hurdle for you. Although you will be disappointed by the awkwardly placed webcam but apart from that there is no concerning issue. Let’s cut to the chase, if you want productivity, gaming and multimedia from a single laptop, XPS 15 will not disappoint you.
